Missy Elliott, Dame Dash, DMX, Monica, Ciara And More Remember Aaliyah
It’s been ten years. The way time goes by so fast, today marks the 10 year anniversary of the fatal death that took the life of R&B singer, songwriter and actress, Aaliyah. Starting yesterday artists have reached out through various media avenues to speak on her memory, personal moments and influence on music. Today, her closest friend that was synonymous with the multi-talented star’s career, Missy Elliott, reflects on her passing with CNN.
Today is the 10 year anniversary of Aaliyah’s passing and I’m sitting here reminiscing and playing music, thinking of the times we spent together, working, laughing, singing, dancing, cutting up. But really, it’s not all that different from any other day because I do think about her every day. Not on purpose, but she is my friend and that’s just how I do. I’ve told the same stories for 9 years – how we met, how me and Tim were scared but Aaliyah was so welcoming and had this smile and way about her that put us at ease, that she liked to take chances and we were able to just be who we were and make good records together.
She loved playing jokes and that’s another part of her personality that made it fun to be around her. As a talent, I think she’s missed because she was unique and a true triple threat. She could sing, dance, and her acting was starting to take off. I’m glad for the memories I have and the time we got to spend together, but I miss my friend.
Rest In Peace and Power Baby Girl.
Earlier today, Mister Cee dedicated his full noon hour mixshow to the late Aaliyah which you can stream below.

After the jump catch words from Dame Dash, DMX, Monica, Ciara, Keyshia Cole and more as they reflect on Aaliyah….
Dame Dash who was dating Aaliyah, opens up for the first time since her death with Billboard’s The Juice.
“My heart was broken. Nothing prepares you for that. She was intelligent and she caught me, I’m the kind of guy who says things sometimes just to make myself laugh, but she would just catch me making jokes for me. I couldn’t get anything past her. She had a very quick mind and a very kind heart. She was always working and shooting movies. She was always gone for like four months at a time, then come back and be gone for another month. She had to rehearse and I was doing my own thing, so it was really hard for us to get long stretches of time together. When you’re with someone like that you buy into a life of being separate, but again, I couldn’t help my feelings.”
“Our time together meant so much that when we got more time, we felt like that [engagement] would be next,” Dame says. “She was one of the best people I ever met. Even with the pain I felt, I would do it all over again.”
Despite their busy schedules the couple cherished every moment they did spend together. “The energy we created together for people to observe was kind of crazy. We’d be in a room full of people talking to each other and it felt like everyone was listening but it would be just us. It would be like we were the only ones in the room,” Dash recalls. “It was like something was going down in history every time I was with her. Every time I was around her I felt it was the place to be.”
DMX speaks with Billboard on working with Aaliyah in the movie Romeo Must Die and the single off the soundtrack, “Back In One Piece”.
The two friends grew closer when working on her first film, Romeo Must Die. “When I was on tour her and Joel Silver came to my dressing room to see if I wanted to be a part of the movie,” DMX tells The Juice. “Most people would have there people call, but she came herself. I’m like, ‘Is this a trick question? You have to ask me if I want to be in a movie with Aaliyah? Hell yeah.’ We [then] met up in Vancouver to [do] Romeo Must Die.”
“She had a presence on TV that was incredible,” DMX continued. “It was sexy but kind of gangster.”
After the film wrapped, DMX and Aaliyah recorded and shot the visuals for the film’s song,”Back in One Piece.” “We did the video in Mount Vernon and Yonkers. I got to bring Aaliyah to the hood. Not many people can say that,” DMX says of “Back in One Piece.”
Ten years after her passing, Aaliyah is still No. 1 in the game to X. “Half these chicks that are doing it right now wouldn’t be doing it. Aaliyah would be on top,” DMX tells The Juice. “As far as I’m concerned she’s still on top.”
“Thank you,” DMX says she would tell Aaliyah if still here. “Thank you for the opportunity. Thank you for memories. They’re all priceless.”
Billboard’s The Juice also has some great words from Ciara, Keyshia Cole, SWV, Monica, Estelle, And More

Missy Elliott Does Dancehall on Spice’s “Fun” Remix (Video)
I’m not totally familiar with Jamaican female dancehall artist Spice, but her collaboration with the oft-missed Missy Elliott is exactly like the title suggests… “Fun.”
Spice’s “Fun” beach party video was shot (and self-directed) before Missy jumped on, so she’s missing from the footage. But her verse fits in just fine, and reminds us that Missy was a champ of the animated party track. Spice is giving me a bit of a dancehall Lil’ Mo vibe.
Spice told Jamaican papers that she was surprised and honored by the collaboration, as well as the invite to perform at Missy’s birthday party alongside Trina two weeks ago.

I’ve written and produced a bunch of Grammy-nominated, #1 hits for artists like Keyshia Cole, Monica and Jasmine Sullivan. I toured the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.
