Jay-Z To Sell Stake in Brooklyn Nets
Yesterday evening Yahoo! reported that Jay-Z plans to give up his small ownership share in the Brooklyn Nets in order to avoid a conflict of interest with his new sports management firm Roc Nation Sports. An unidentified source indicated that Jay hopes to have the deal done by June, which would allow him to approach players entering this year’s NBA draft. In the following clip, Bloomberg finance reporter Dominic Chu speaks on Jay’s contributions to the team and why this move is necessary for Roc Nation Sports to move forward.
Perhaps more importantly, Jay can finally stop pretending to like the Nets and go back to rooting for the only NYC basketball team that matters.

Jay-Z Takes Roc Nation To Universal Music Group
Jay-Z:
“We are looking forward to working with Lucian and the incredible team he’s assembled at Universal. We would like to applaud Lucian for collaborating with us to strike a new age deal. This agreement presents a unique opportunity for Roc Nation’s artists—being able to continue to operate as an independent label with the strength, power and reach of the best major. I look forward to a long and prosperous collaboration with UMG. It feels good to be home.”

Jay-Z Brings Roc Nation to Universal Music
The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that Jay-Z has finalized a deal to bring his Roc Nation label to Universal Music Group. The deal gives Universal the rights to release Jay’s next solo LP, as well as new albums from Roc Nation artists such as Rihanna and Shakira. Jay had previously negotiated deals with Atlantic and Sony Music for Roc Nation’s music, but this latest agreement will consolidate the label’s distribution under Universal Music Group, Hov’s old employer during his tenure as president of Def Jam.
In other news, Republican Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart are not exactly thrilled with Jay and Bey’s highly publicized visit to the communist nation of Cuba last week, and are calling for an investigation into the trip, which may have violated US travel restrictions to the island nation.
Update: It looks like Jay will also be doing the Made In America Festival in Philly again this August, check out the trailer after the jump.

Jay-Z Has a Song on The Great Gatsby Soundtrack
As you may have heard, Jay is helping to produce the score for the new Baz Luhrmann directed take on the story of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Up until now, I had assumed Jay would be playing the role of a writer/producer, but the tracklist for the soundtrack made it’s way on to the web today and it turns out he has recorded a solo song for the project called “100$ Bill”.
Also appearing on the soundtrack are Lana Del Rey and Beyonce and Andre 3000 doing a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black”, which you can hear a short snippet of in this new theatrical trailer that also dropped today.

Jay-Z Launches Roc Nation Sports, Signs Robinson Cano
Earlier today, Jay-Z unveiled his new sports management venture Roc Nation Sports with the announcement of their first signee, All-Star Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano.
Roc Nation Sports will be a joint venture with the sports division of talent management juggernaut Creative Artists Agency, a company which already counts superstar athletes Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade and Sidney Crosby amongst its roster of clients.
Reporting on the venture, Forbes.com raised the interesting question of whether Jay’s minority stake in the Brooklyn Nets will result in a conflict of interest should the new firm seek to represent current NBA players.
Hit the jump for the full press release detailing the Cano signing.
Roc Nation, a full-service entertainment company founded by Shawn “JAY Z” Carter, announced today the launch of Roc Nation Sports, a full-service sports management company, and has signed MLB All-Star Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees. Roc Nation Sports, led by Carter and Juan Perez, who serves as President, has partnered with CAA Sports, a division of Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a leading entertainment and sports agency, to co-represent Cano.
“Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” said Carter.
A four-time MLB All-Star, Cano is a member of the Yankees’ 2009 World Series championship team, a four-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and two-time Gold Glove Award winner. Since his Major League debut in May 2005, he leads all second basemen in hits, doubles, and RBIs and has more home runs than any second baseman in Yankees history. The son of former Major League player José Cano, he wears No. 24 to honor Jackie Robinson, after whom he is named and whose No. 42 is retired in baseball. In 2011, the Cano family established the RC24 Foundation to provide help and hope to sick and underprivileged children in New York City and the Dominican Republic.
“At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors both on and off the field,” said Cano. “I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates.”
Cano will be represented on the field by a team of agents led by CAA Sports’ Brodie Van Wagenen. Since Opening Day 2011, CAA Sports’ baseball group has negotiated more than $ 1.1 billion in Major League contracts, including eight contracts with a guaranteed value of $ 50 million or more, of which four exceeds $ 100 million, more than any other agency.
“Jay Z and his team at Roc Nation have successfully orchestrated powerful brand and business-building opportunities for their clients,” said Michael Levine, Co-Head, CAA Sports. “We look forward to combining our wide-reaching resources on behalf of top athlete clients like Robinson Cano to help them accomplish their goals on and off the field.”
