Kendrick Lamar Talks to Erykah Badu for Interview Magazine

Erykah Badu recently spoke to Kendrick Lamar over the phone during a layover of his in Denver, CO for a piece in Interview Magazine.

Kendrick talks about Compton, making music and being able to turn a negative into a positive.

BADU: You called yourself “Compton’s human sacrifice” on m.A.A.d city. What have you done in your life to make you feel that way?

LAMAR: Probably one of the hardest things to do was to actually do something positive coming from that space. It was so easy for me to dabble in everything else that my homeboys was doing, just being in the middle of the fire. So I felt like that was the sacrifice—for me to come out of that and do something positive. The moment I made that decision to get in the studio and actually work and study the culture of hip-hop, then everything just started to open up and blossom for me.

Kendrick also retells the story of seeing Dr. Dre & ‘Pac shooting “California Love” in a Bentley in Compton 15 years before he met Dre professionally and goes on to give his own top 10-11 MCs list. Read more here.

[Video] Lil Wayne Talks ‘Carter 5′ & Possibility Of A Big Tymers Album With Drake

Get More:
Music News

One of the projects that comes before Tha Carter V may be a sequel to Tunechi and Birdman’s collaborative 2006 Like Father, Like Son album, but that wasn’t the most surprising project Weezy mentioned. “Possibility of that, possibility of a Big Tymers album, adding Drake,” Weezy said. “But that kid is so busy, it’s all kind of possibilities.”

The original incarnation consisted of Birdman and former Cash Money producer Mannie Fresh. The duo dropped their debut album How You Luv That in 1998, not long after Birdman linked his independent New Orleans-based label with Universal Music Group. They released their final album Big Money Heavyweight in 2003 and are most known for their biggest single “Still Fly” from their 2002 Hood Rich album.
